As the architects behind the design of the new cottage nestled along the picturesque shores of Lake Muskoka, Canada, our vision was to create a harmonious blend of contemporary elegance and natural beauty. The Owners first request was to keep the new cottage near the water just as the previous cottage was. Our approach was a seamless integration with its surroundings, boasting panoramic views of the tranquil lake and lush woodlands. The architecture draws inspiration from the region’s rich heritage of cottage living, incorporating traditional elements while embracing modern comforts.
However, the design process was not without its challenges, chief among them being the region’s unpredictable weather patterns. Situated in an area known for its dramatic seasonal shifts, the cottage had to be designed to withstand the harsh winters and sudden temperature fluctuations. To address this, we employed durable materials and advanced insulation techniques, ensuring the structure’s resilience against heavy snow loads and frigid temperatures. Additionally, large windows were strategically positioned to maximize natural light while maintaining energy efficiency. The result is a captivating lakeside retreat that not only captures the essence of the location but also stands as a robust shelter against the whims of Mother Nature – a beautiful escape for our client and her family.
Embarking on the architectural restoration along the revered St. Charles Avenue, we undertook a transformative journey that marries history with contemporary living. Our endeavor encompassed the deliberate demolition of the rear house, breathing an air of modernity into the space while preserving its historic essence. At the heart of the design stands a gourmet kitchen, where the culinary arts intertwine with modern functionality, creating a hub of gastronomic inspiration. The living area embraces tradition through a carefully integrated fireplace, offering a cozy sanctuary.
Responding to our clients’ wishes, we crafted an air-conditioned screened-in porch, an extension that melds indoor comfort with the allure of the outdoors, perfect for relaxation and gatherings. The bathroom, reminiscent of a luxury hotel spa, epitomizes indulgence. Our work on St. Charles Avenue embodies the delicate balance of architectural heritage and contemporary desires. It’s a symphony where the echoes of the past harmonize with the rhythm of modern living, culminating in a residence that exudes luxury, comfort, and a profound sense of home
Having completed our client’s second home in New Orleans, they requested design assistance with a new boathouse at their summer island in Muskoka. The existing boathouse, slated for demolition, had a flat roof and bore no resemblance to the main cottage. Collectively, we devised a masterplan for the island siting the structure down the shore so not to impact views from the cottage. By aligning the new boathouse with sun angles allows our clients to enjoy both outdoor seating and beautiful sunsets over the water. The sun-filled living space on the second level, with it’s large stone fireplace, now has a more symbiotic relationship with the main cottage. A rich, cedar-lined ground floor, with it’s fully functioning boat slips, evokes the rich feeling of wooden boats once made in the area. The boathouse has become the perfect spot for the family to enjoy summer life on the water.
